Is it just me, or is looking for a modest swimsuit the WORST?! All the modest swimwear tends to play hide-and-go-seek whenever I walk into a store.

Seriously! Swimsuit shopping is terrible! For one, finding a suit that fits well is difficult. For two, finding a modest swimsuit is next to impossible nowadays. However, it is not completely impossible, so stay tuned for my best advice about how to stay modest at the pool.

First off though, I want to give a few disclaimers since we are talking about modesty:

  • Modesty MUST flow from the heart. You must have a modest and humble heart in order to truly be dressing modestly.
  • What looks modest on one person won’t necessarily look modest on the next. In other words, one swimsuit might look modest on you but not on me.
  • You must determine what your personal modesty standards are. Otherwise, you’d just be following a bunch of rules from an outsider.
  • I am NOT here to tell you what sort of swimsuit you can and cannot wear. I’m not your mother. :)

There we go. Glad we have that out of the way :)

What is modest swimwear?

Before we get started discussing how to find modest swimwear, I would first like to say what modest swimwear is not.

*Takes a deep breath*

Bikinis are not modest swimwear, no matter how you want to look at it. You can have the most modest heart, and that’s great! However, that doesn’t change the fact that wearing a bikini is not any more modest than running around in your underwear would be.

To learn why bikinis are not modest and why they do not empower you as a woman, I encourage you to check out the informative video The Evolution Of The Swimsuit. The history of the bikini is fascinating to me!

Why is it even important that we wear modest swimsuits?

I love how Phylicia Masonheimer puts it:

Modesty is humility in action. This is why Christian girls should be the very BEST at it! We have been given the gracious love of God. Not only that, but God has explicitly outlined just how valuable we are to Him. The fact that Almighty God loves imperfect girls like us is humbling, and our response is to worship God in every area of life, including how we dress. In realizing how much God loved me and how beautifully He designed my body, I realized that I was devaluing His best intentions by wearing my bikini, and I put it away for good.

-Phylicia Masonheimer

I’ve been searching for modest swimsuits for years. I don’t swim very often in the summer (despite living in hot Texas), so I can usually get by with just having one or two swimsuits, and those can usually last me for a couple years.

Enough chit chat! Let’s get started!! :)

The Secret To Finding A Modest Swimsuit:

Shopping for a modest swimsuit can be a real pain; it seems like there just isn't much out there! However, there are a few things you can do to find one.

This secret has 5 parts to it :)

1. Don’t give up!

This is my first tip because searching for modest swimsuits can be pretty discouraging. It seems the most “in” thing is to show off the most skin.

However, don’t give up! Don’t get discouraged! There are modest swimsuits out there, you just have to keep an eye out.

Speaking of which…

2. Constantly keep an eye out!

You never know when or where you might spot the perfect swimsuit out of the corner of your eye. I’ve found modest swimsuits at Target, Walmart, and J.C.Penny without even meaning too!

I find it most difficult to find a modest swimsuit when I am out and about hunting for one. (Is that just me? This is the case for all clothing shopping in my experience. I can never find what I’m looking for…)

It works out much better when I just happen to see a modest swimsuit as I walk through stores. Much less stressful.

3. Know What You’re Looking For.

Not all modest swimsuits were created equal ;)

Do you like one-pieces? Two-pieces? Do you want the tankini to completely cover your stomach, or is a little skin okay? Do you want a swimsuit that shows as little cleavage as possible?

What about your legs- are you okay with bikini bottoms? Do you prefer swim shorts or skirts?

Just as you must come up with your everyday personal modesty guidelines, you also must have personal modesty guidelines for swimsuits.

As an example, my personal standards for myself are the following:

  • I prefer two-pieces (makes going to the bathroom easier) but if I find a modest one-piece I consider it.
  • I do not like V-neck cuts on swimsuits. Usually, they go wayyy too low for me.
  • As far as tops go, I always like my swimsuit top to cover all of my stomach.
  • Concerning bottoms- I have worn tennis skorts as swim bottoms before, dry-fit athletic shorts, and even swimsuit bottoms that are more short-like as opposed to bikini bottoms.

4. Know your budget.

Most swimsuits are quite expensive. If you know why, please tell me in a comment- I have no idea why swimsuits cost so much!

Like I said above, on average I only buy one swimsuit per year, so I can afford to buy a more expensive swimsuit. If you go swimming every day and need multiple suits, you might prefer that your swimsuits be cheaper. Regardless, knowing your budget beforehand helps you figure out where to look, as you could then cross off expensive stores from your shopping list.

5. Know if you prefer shopping in-store or online.

Sometimes it’s better to try things on in the store before purchasing.

However, sometimes shopping online can help us find some really cute modest swimsuits! If the company has a good return policy, then you can try it on at your home and then ship it back if it doesn’t fit.

Jessica Rey has a really cute and modest swimsuit line. (She’s the one speaking in the bikini video I mentioned above.)

Last summer, I bought a swimsuit from Lime Ricki and I absolutely LOVE it! Lime Ricki has such cute swimsuits, and I love how they have models of all different sizes!

They are a little bit more on the pricey side, but if you can afford it, I totally recommend it! (Tip: Check out their clearance items!)

Disclaimer: This is NOT a sponsored post. I just love them so much I couldn’t help but share!

Wow! Awesome post. I have a problem: I’m not confident around guys. At all. I’m a naturally quiet person, but when I’m with my friends, I really open up. I’m also pretty friendly to new people too! I just clam up around guys. The issue is, I don’t really respect the guys at my school. They’re just jerks. Still, how can I talk to them without 1) flirting, 2) getting my feelings hurt, and 3) shutting up? Thanks!
