I don’t know who said it, or where I heard it but in my Bible, at the end of Matthew I have the following words written:
“Mission’s isn’t part of God’s plan. It is God’s plan.”
As I think about these words I can’t help but think how true they are and how the New Testament really shares this message.
I think that it is important for us to first define what I mean by missions. For me, and for the purpose of this post, missions is the sharing of God and His Story to others.
Missions is the sharing of God and His Story to others.
What do you think God’s purpose for man is? I believe that we were put on this earth to love God and to make Him known. If we take that as God’s plan, then it is easy to see that Mission’s is God’s plan.
If we love God, then we want to obey Him. Obeying Him includes obeying His commands which includes the command to go and make disciples (Matthew 28:19). If we are to make God known, then that is really just another way of putting our definition of missions.
So you are probably wondering, how does this look in my day to day life?
Well there is no easy answer to this question. The answer is different for each person and I encourage you to take the time to really think and pray about this and seek what God wants you to do.
For some people missions we take the form of what we traditionally think of when we talk about missions. You may be called to pack up your life and move to a new country or area in order to live as strangers in a community and share God to others.
This may not be your calling. For others, missions may be writing a blog or creating videos and sharing the story of God with millions of strangers over the internet.
It may even be talking about God to your friends and family, those in your immediate circle.
I believe that it is important to start with those closest to you and work out from there.
In the book of Acts, it is recorded that the disciples were told to share the Good News in Jerusalem, Samaria and to the ends of the earth. If we think about that it today’s context Jerusalem is your own neighbourhood. It is those who know you best. That is where you should start, with your friends, family, colleagues and those in your everyday life.
For the disciples, Samaria was thought of as enemies. So in our lives today we could say that Samaria is those that we don’t know well or that we are fearful of or even dislike. This may be the mean neighbour, the colleague who is always putting you down or even the homeless in your town that you are afraid of. This is about stepping out of your comfort zone.
Finally, the ends of the earth. I think this is pretty self-explanatory. We are called to go out from our neighbourhood to share the story of God. This doesn’t necessarily mean you need to head overseas. It is about stepping past what you know and stepping into the unknown.
So remember missions isn’t part of God’s plan, it is God’s plan and He calls us to share His story with all that we know.
I know that this is hard but I want to encourage you to remember that it is possible. So take a risk, share God with someone today. It can be as simple as loving on someone or you can share the Gospel. Step out in faith and know that God is there to help you.
